Friday, August 15 - Energized Home Causes 2nd Alarm House Fire Powerful storms swept through the area on Friday night leaving River Edge fire companies busy responding to calls. On the way back from a call for a car stranded in water on Monroe Avenue, at approximately 1739 hours, Central Dispatch advised that there was a report of smoke showing from a home on Fifth Avenue. Truck 1 and Rescue 1 arrived on scene first to confirm a working structure fire with wires down in the street and on the house. Truck 1 dropped a hose line until Engine 2 arrived on scene, while the Rescue company searched the house for occupants. No one was home at the time, but in the search process, Rescue 1 saved the family cat. Because of the electrical hazard the home posed, fire companies could not operate hose lines until PSE&G turned off the power. Firefighters had to standby and contain the stubborn fire, which mostly consumed the electrical work within the walls. Incident Command upgraded to a 2nd alarm which brought units from Oradell, New Milford and Hackensack. After the scene was safe and the home was no longer energized, crews began to open up the walls and extinguish the fire.

Thur, Feb 28, 2008 – Persistence Pays Off This afternoon, River Edge units were dispatched to a residence on Kimberly Way for a report of a smell of gas inside the home. Chief 1-0 (Weismann) arrived on scene first, followed by the Ladder company. Upon arrival, Ladder 1 investigated the source of the smell and with the help of our gas meters, determined that gas was not present. Although no gas present, in the garage was a slight odor of something burning. Ladder 1 and Rescue 1’s crews could not find a source of the smell after sweeping the area with meters and the thermal imaging cameras. After an hour of investigating, some smoke began to develop toward the rear of the garage. Engine Company 3 dropped a precautionary hose line to the garage area while the truck company looked for the source. It was soon determined that a freezer motor in the garage burnt out and caused a light smoke condition. The freezer was turned off and the home turned back over to the owner. Wed, Feb 13, 2008 – CO calls on the rise The last 3 days, companies have been responding to carbon monoxide alarms left and right. With temperatures outside reaching the teens, many residents are turning up the heat in their homes. CO alarm activations are caused by faulty furnaces and should be taken seriously. Although many times these alarms turn out to be false because of dead detector batteries, nothing should be taken for granted. Residents are urged to call 911 and evacuate their home in the event of a carbon monoxide problem. Tips about carbon monoxide (CO)
